Last night I attended a spoken word and motivational speech from an AIDS activist named Denise Stokes. Denise has been living with HIV/AIDS for twenty-seven years. She is by far the strongest woman to grace me with her presence. It was a very emotional experience for me that I cried and every now and then you could hear the sniffles from the other people in attendance. The décor was elegant and warming. There was poetry read by some of our own fellow students about unwanted pregnancies, STD’s, and HIV. Uujima did a performance afterwards.
I believe that even with my book smarts and knowledge about this silent killer it didn’t prepare me for what Denise had to say. I’ve seen TV documentaries about AIDS, even though they are very much true you can’t feel the victim’s pain through the glass. I saw the raw and candid images of a woman’s life being shattered by this disease. She is so powerful to even relive the rape and drugs. She often smiled laughed and told jokes during her speech, which I could only imagine was difficult to do.
On TV you see people crying and telling you not to be stupid like they were. Not once did Ms. Stokes cry she didn’t ball like a baby like most people would. I admit at times her mannerisms showed pain and she chocked on words a bit, but she never shed a tear. She has great voice and diction. She always wanted to be a poet.
Now Ms. Stokes is writing a book. At times she says she has to step away from the horrid truth and leave some details out. I encouraged her to leave everything exactly as it happened from start to finish and readers will get a feel of how serious unprotected sex and HIV is. I feel that this book will decrease the risk and gain peoples knowledge of HIV. Well honestly I can only hope. I know it made me think twice about making a decision as serious as to whom I will lay with, although I never took that to be an easy decision. I had modeling practice last night but I don’t regret my decision for “skipping” that to listen ...
